Sheesh, what are blogs for if not for blogging? I really need to figure out (it’s high time) what this blog is for…I mean, is this like a “here’s what’s going on in my life” blog, or a “here’s cool stuff” blog, or “random stuff” blog? Hmm, I really should peg that down. Either way and anyways, this post will at least be a catch all update.

Sad to miss out on Tana’s wedding and everybody in the family being together…It’s weird that we’ve gotten to the point in our family history where it’s significant when we’re all together. Lori and I made elk and potatoes for dinner…a requiem of Wyoming.

Work has been hectic. I’ve added a couple of new projects and recently contracted the flu (I was bored)…so there’s that. Good music and good friends abound everywhere. Thelma comes back to the US after 2.5 years in Burma. These are strange times. I’m struck by how much more uninteresting I would be without the incredible people that have come into my life. I don’t know…something along the lines of trying to recognize the face of my own humanity.

30 people, Today, were killed in a suicide bomber blast in a cafe in baghdad. That happened today. They have names and families. They leave friends and jobs and possessions. They leave a brother, a son, an uncle, a friend, a boyfriend. Each one of them has a last name and a favorite color and thoughts on religion and a story from childhood. Each one of them woke up that morning and got dressed in clothes that they knew well. They would have wept, sobbed in the morning, if they had known. That happened today.

uno: music, try Joe Bonamassa and Lucy Rose and Watchlistentell on youtube. I’ll explain. Joe Bonamassa is this AWESOME guitarist that Dylan put to me. His dad, apparently, played with SRV back in the day, and he’s been tearing things up since he was about 12 (seriously, youtube “12 year old bonamassa”). A sampling treat:

I’ve sent “Night Bus” around already, but I wanted to post it. Anyways, Lucy Rose is young and her voice is very nice. I think many may like it. I can’t find (a rarity for me) anywhere to get “Be Alright”, but if you go to Lucy’s myspace here and click on “Be Alright”, I don’t think that you’ll be disappointed. (I recently learned that commas outside of quotations are totally fine and often grammatically correct. Pah. Who knew, nei?).

San: So Watchlistentell. The idea is that indie bands record acoustic versions of their songs atlocations that are either very secluded or sentimentally important to the band (or both). See Lucy Rose. There are a number of other songs on there worth nothing and listening to. One of which is this one. Geez. Sit still while you watch it and watch it while you listen.

Crocodile: Lori and I went as Lindsey and Tobias Funke last night to her work Halloween party. We looked pretty good. It being a weekday (and Halloween being…count it…3 days away), most people on the subway were cautiously stand-offish against the “only in color, Michael” blue never-nude in the bathrobe standing next to the obvious hooker.)

Because as I walk down the sidewalk, I seem to be repeatedly struck by two very, very uninteresting facts:

1) I cannot prove, in a formal sense, that I have any real knowledge. This is fundamentally an epistemological inquiry, but is more a question of what is it that is in my head that means anything. (?) If my section of the human network evaporated, the loss would be zero almost surely. I don’t mean that to be nihilistic; man just seems very insignificant. Rachel said something recently along the lines that man has meaning collectively. That’s some pretty deep shiz.

2) What differentiated this moment from the moment right before it? People come into my life and they leave. I eat. I sleep. I work. I remember things. I forget other things. I forget things that I once remembered and remember things that I know* (see point 1) that I had forgotten. How are these instances significant?

(*side note 1: ever since French, I always have to drop “that”s all over the place. The verb constructions necessitate “que” everywhere, “je sais que”…I know that I’ll watch Steven Segal: Lawman tonight…but in English, it seems, we often just say “I know I’ll watch…”. Sorry for that)

(*side note 2: A certain Steve Gilmore is trying to entrap me out of 60 bucks. He agreed to sell me Dylan tickets for 90 bucks a piece (ouch right?), and now he wants 118. I should make a blog list of people whose names my children will use as curse words…)

Anyways, for all of these reasons, and the fact that at times don’t we all feel complete disconnection(?).

I wish that I understood this better.

Annie Dillard does a bit of fact dropping, though so do I, and though she is, in the end, fascinating to read. Her constructions are profound.

I don’t understand the human race.
